Strength and conditioning (S&C) is the training that builds the engine behind everything else you do. It's the fitness work that gives you the power, stamina and resilience to last longer on the pads, hit harder, and recover faster between rounds. And if you've never thrown a punch in your life, that's fine too: S&C is simply a smart, well-coached way to get fitter and stronger.

At Shin Kick we welcome all standards. Whether you train Muay Thai and want more in the tank, or you're fitness-first and just want a session that actually works, you'll find a friendly, family atmosphere and a coach who meets you where you are. Sessions are scaled to you, so a complete beginner and a seasoned member can train in the same room and both leave having worked hard.

We're a full-time gym in Guildford with three matted areas, around ten minutes' walk from the town centre and mainline station. You'll never be the only newcomer, and there's always someone on hand to show you how a movement should feel. Come and try it: your first class is free.

New to this?

What your first S&C class is really like

Turn up about ten minutes early in comfy kit and trainers, with a bottle of water. Let the coach know it's your first session and that you're new to this; they'll keep an eye on you and adjust anything that feels like too much. There's no kit to buy and nothing to figure out in advance.

A typical session starts with a gentle warm-up to get you moving, then works through strength and conditioning drills, things like bodyweight movements, kettlebells, sled work, circuits and core. The coach demonstrates every exercise, gives you a version that fits your current fitness, and checks your form as you go. You go at your own pace and rest when you need to.

There's no sparring and no contact in S&C, and no fitness test to pass before you start. You'll likely be working alongside other people of all levels, including other first-timers. By the end you'll be tired in a good way, and you'll know exactly how to come back and do it again.

Why you'll love it

This is for you if…

  • You train Muay Thai or another discipline and want more power, stamina and resilience to back it up
  • You're fitness-first and want a stronger, fitter body without needing to be a fighter
  • You're bored of the normal gym and want coached sessions instead of wandering between machines
  • You're a complete beginner who wants to get fit in a welcoming, no-judgement room
  • You're returning to training and want to rebuild your strength and conditioning at your own pace

Common questions

Do I need to be fit or have any experience to start?

No. Strength and conditioning is open to all levels and ages, and every exercise is scaled to where you are right now. Total beginners are genuinely welcome, and your coach will adjust the work so it suits you. Come and try your first class for free.

I'm not a fighter. Is S&C still for me?

Absolutely. You don't have to be a fighter to train with us. Plenty of our members come purely for fitness and strength. S&C is simply a smart, coached way to get fitter and stronger, whether or not you ever step on the pads.

What should I wear and bring?

Comfy clothes you can move in, trainers and a bottle of water. There's no special kit to buy to get started. Turn up about ten minutes early so the coach can say hello and show you around.

Is there any sparring or contact in these classes?

No. Strength and conditioning is fitness training, so there's no sparring and no contact. It's drills, circuits and conditioning work, all coached and scaled to your level.

How much does it cost?

A Muay Thai membership includes all Muay Thai classes plus gym use during opening hours, and is £90 a month for adults (18+), £75 for students (14–17) and £60 for juniors (5–13). You can also train pay-as-you-go at £15 per class (£20 for two hours). Your first class is free, so you can try before you decide.
