MMA, or mixed martial arts, is the sport that combines it all — the stand-up striking of Muay Thai and boxing with the takedowns and ground game of grappling. Instead of joining two different clubs to learn two halves of the sport, you learn the whole thing in one place, with coaches who train it as one connected skill.

At Shin Kick we run MMA as a proper, structured class — not striking with a few takedowns bolted on. You'll work standing up and on the ground, build the skills in a sensible order, and progress at a pace that suits you. Whether you're brand new, already strike and want to learn to grapple, or you're sizing up a serious gym to train at, there's a place for you on the mats.

We're a full-time martial arts gym, ten minutes' walk from Guildford town centre and the mainline station, with on-site parking. All levels and all backgrounds train here, and you really don't have to be a fighter to walk through the door.

New to this?

What your first MMA class is really like

Come along in comfy clothes you can move in, and bring some water — we'll lend you the gloves and gear you need to get started. Arrive about ten minutes early so a coach can say hello, learn your name and point you in the right direction. Nobody is left to figure it out alone.

A typical session starts with a gentle warm-up, then you'll learn technique step by step — some standing, some on the ground — and drill it with a partner at a controlled, friendly pace. The coaches keep an eye on you and adjust things to your level, so you're always working on something that makes sense for where you are.

Here's the part most people worry about: you will not be thrown into hard sparring on day one. Learning comes first, and any harder training is built up gradually as you get more comfortable and confident. You're there to learn, not to be tested.

Why you'll love it

  • Learn the complete sport — striking and grappling — in one class, instead of joining two separate clubs
  • Train at a full-time gym with two floors and long opening hours, so MMA fits around your work or studies
  • Brilliant all-round fitness: strength, stamina, coordination and real skill, all in one session
  • Friendly, family atmosphere where all levels and ages train together and beginners are genuinely welcome
  • A standalone MMA-only membership at £60 a month — no need to commit to anything bigger to train the sport you came for
  • A clear path forward if you ever want to push harder or compete, with a fight team you can grow into

This is for you if…

  • You want to learn the full mix — striking and grappling — rather than just one range
  • You already box or do Muay Thai and want to add takedowns and ground skills
  • You're after a tough, varied workout that teaches a real, practical skill
  • You want practical self-defence that covers both standing up and on the ground
  • You're scouting a serious gym and want to see the coaching depth before you commit

Common questions

Do I need any experience to start MMA?

No. Our MMA classes welcome all levels, and you won't be the only beginner in the room. The coaches teach the basics step by step and meet you wherever you're starting from — total beginners are genuinely welcome.

Will I have to spar hard on my first class?

No. You will not be thrown into hard sparring on day one. The focus is on learning technique and drilling it at a controlled pace, with any harder training built up gradually as you grow more confident.

Is MMA a separate membership, or is it part of the Muay Thai membership?

MMA has its own standalone membership at £60 a month, so you can train MMA on its own without signing up for anything bigger. If you'd rather try before committing, you can also pay as you go at £15 per class.

What's the difference between MMA and just doing Muay Thai or boxing?

Muay Thai and boxing are striking sports — punches, kicks, knees and elbows on the feet. MMA adds grappling on top: takedowns and ground work. In MMA you learn how to blend standing and ground skills into one complete sport.

What should I wear and bring?

Just wear comfortable clothes you can move and train in, and bring some water. We'll lend you the gloves and gear you need for your first class, so there's nothing to buy before you start.

Where are you and is there parking?

We're at Weyford House, 21/22 Woodbridge Meadows, Guildford, GU1 1BA — about a ten-minute walk from the town centre and mainline station, with on-site parking. Give us a ring on 01483 578358 if you'd like directions.

Can I just try a class first?

Yes — your first class is free. Come along, give it a go with no pressure, and see how it feels before you decide on anything. It's the easiest way to know if MMA at Shin Kick is for you.
