Most people who walk through our doors for self-defence aren't fighters, and they have no plans to become one. They're ordinary people in and around Guildford who simply want to feel more capable, more aware, and calmer if a situation ever turned bad. That's a completely normal reason to train, and it's one we hear all the time.

Here's the honest truth about self-defence: the skills that actually work under pressure are the same ones combat athletes drill every week. How to stand so you're balanced. How to keep your hands up and protect your head. How to throw a straight punch with your whole body behind it. How to read distance and stay aware of what's around you. You don't get those from a one-off weekend seminar — you build them by training little and often, in a real gym, with real coaching.

That's exactly what Muay Thai and boxing give you at Shin Kick. They're proven, full-contact-tested systems, but you set the pace. You can get every self-defence benefit — the fitness, the reflexes, the confidence and the technique — without ever sparring or being hit. We welcome all standards and all ages, and your first class is completely free.

What your first self-defence class is really like

The most common worry we hear is "I'll turn up and get punched in the face on day one." You won't. There's no sparring and no contact in a beginner session. You'll spend your first class learning the basics on the pads and bags, guided by a coach who's used to working with complete first-timers.

A typical session starts with a gentle warm-up to get you moving, then moves into technique — a stance, a guard, a simple punch or two — practised on the pads where a coach holds for you. It's hands-on, it's friendly, and you'll pick things up faster than you expect. You don't need any fitness level to start; you work at your own speed and stop whenever you need to.

Wear comfortable clothes and trainers, bring some water, and that's it — we lend the gloves. There are changing rooms and showers on site, parking right outside, and we're about a ten-minute walk from Guildford town centre and the mainline station. You won't be the only beginner in the room, and nobody expects you to know what you're doing.

Why you'll love it

  • Practical, tested skills — Muay Thai and boxing are proven systems, not theory, so what you learn actually holds up under pressure
  • Real confidence that carries into everyday life, from walking home at night to simply standing taller
  • Genuine fitness as a side effect — you get stronger, fitter and faster while you learn
  • Better awareness and composure, so you're calmer and quicker to read a situation
  • No need to spar or fight — you can get every self-defence benefit without contact
  • A friendly, family atmosphere where all levels and ages are made welcome

This is for you if…

  • You want to feel safer and more confident but have never trained before
  • You like the idea of self-defence but the thought of fighting or sparring puts you off
  • You want to get fit and learn a real skill at the same time, not just go through the motions on a treadmill
  • You'd feel more comfortable walking home, travelling alone, or handling an awkward situation
  • You want something you'll actually stick with — fun, varied and taught by coaches who care

Common questions

Do I have to fight or spar to learn self-defence here?

No. You can learn everything you need on the pads and bags without any sparring or contact. Plenty of our members train purely for fitness, confidence and self-defence and never spar at all. If you ever want to add light controlled drills later, that's your choice — it's never required.

Is Muay Thai or boxing actually good for real-life self-defence?

Yes. Both are full, tested systems built around the fundamentals that matter most under pressure: balance, a strong guard, powerful straight punches, footwork and awareness. Because you practise these regularly in a real gym, they become reactions you can rely on rather than moves you only half-remember from a one-off course.

I've never trained and I'm not very fit. Can I still come?

Absolutely. No experience and no fitness level are needed — you don't have to be a fighter to train with us. You work at your own pace, and you'll be one of several first-timers in the room. We welcome all standards and all ages.

What should I wear and bring to my first class?

Just wear comfortable clothes and trainers and bring some water. We lend the gloves, so there's nothing to buy before you start. There are changing rooms and showers on site if you need them.

Is my first class really free?

Yes — your first class is free, with no pressure to join afterwards. It's the easiest way to see the gym, meet a coach and decide if it's right for you. If you'd like to carry on, Muay Thai membership is £90 a month for adults (18+), £75 for students aged 14–17 and £60 for juniors aged 5–13, with a £25 joining fee. You can also pay as you go at £15 per class.

Where are you and is there parking?

We're at Weyford House, 21/22 Woodbridge Meadows, Guildford, Surrey GU1 1BA, with parking right outside and a ten-minute walk from the town centre and mainline station. To check class times or ask which session suits you, call us on 01483 578358.
