Thinking about trying Muay Thai but not sure if it’s “for you”? You’re in good company. A lot of women picture a room full of seasoned fighters and quietly decide they’d never fit in. The reality is far gentler — and far more welcoming — than the films suggest.
This guide walks you through everything you might be wondering before you book, from what to wear to what actually happens in a beginner’s class. No pressure, no jargon. Just honest answers.
You don’t have to be a fighter to train
Let’s clear up the biggest myth first. Most people who train Muay Thai have no interest in stepping into a ring, and never will. They come to get fitter, to feel stronger, to switch off from a stressful week, or simply to learn something new.
At Shin Kick, you don’t have to be a fighter to train with us. We welcome all standards and all ages, and beginners are genuinely part of the mix — not an afterthought. You set the pace. You can push hard or take it steady, and nobody is watching or judging.
Will I be the only beginner? (No.)
This is the worry we hear most from women, and it’s completely understandable. Walking into a new gym alone is daunting.
Here’s the reassuring truth: every single person in that room started exactly where you are now. They remember the first-class nerves too. Muay Thai has a friendly, family atmosphere by nature — people partner up, cheer each other on, and the regulars tend to be the first to make a newcomer feel at home.
If you’d feel more comfortable starting in a women’s space, we also run ladies-only sessions where you can find your feet alongside other women who are learning together.
What to wear and bring
You don’t need to buy anything special to start. For your first class, simply bring:
- Comfortable workout clothes — shorts or leggings and a t-shirt are perfect
- A water bottle — you’ll want it
- A small towel — you’ll work up a sweat, and that’s a good sign
- Bare feet — Muay Thai is trained barefoot, so no trainers needed on the mats
You won’t need your own gloves or wraps to try a class. Once you decide to keep going, a coach can point you towards the basics — but there’s no need to spend a penny on kit before you know you enjoy it.
A small extra many members swear by is the gym’s own Athlon Muay Thai Rub (£25 per 100ml bottle), a traditional liniment you can warm into your muscles before training and after. Lovely to have once you’re going regularly, but absolutely not needed on day one.
What actually happens in a first class
Every class is a little different, but a beginner-friendly session usually follows a familiar shape. There’s a warm-up to get your body moving, then some time on the basics — your stance, how to hold your hands, and a few fundamental strikes broken down slowly. You’ll often pair up to practise on pads, and a coach will guide you through it step by step.
You will not be thrown in to spar on your first day. Learning the technique comes first, always, and you go at a pace that feels right for you. Expect to leave a bit sweaty, probably smiling, and surprised by how quickly the hour went.
How Muay Thai helps beyond the workout
Yes, it’s brilliant for fitness — you’ll build stamina, strength and coordination without it ever feeling like a slog on a treadmill. But many women tell us the biggest changes happen off the mats. Learning to throw a proper kick or hold your ground in pad work builds a quiet confidence that follows you out the door. It’s a real release for stress, and it gives you a genuine community to belong to.
Where we are
Shin Kick is a full-time martial arts and fitness centre in Guildford, on Woodbridge Meadows — about a 10-minute walk from the town centre and the mainline station, so it’s easy to reach by train or on foot. We have three matted areas and a timetable run by a team of coaches, several of whom make regular training trips to Thailand to keep their teaching sharp.
We’re open Monday to Friday from 9am to 9pm, and Saturday and Sunday mornings from 9am to 2pm, so there’s room to fit training around work or study.
A simple, honest note on cost
There’s no pressure to commit before you’re ready. Your first class is completely free, so you can try it with nothing to lose.
If you decide to carry on, adult Muay Thai membership is £90 a month and includes all Muay Thai classes plus use of the gym during opening hours. There are reduced rates for students aged 14–17 (£75) and juniors aged 5–13 (£60), and if you’d rather not commit monthly, you can pay as you go at £15 a class. Just ask a coach and we’ll talk you through the options honestly.
